Welcome to
Korcula!
An
island that lies in the middle of the sunny Adriatic, also called the
Pearl of the Middle Ages. The City of Korcula is situated on the
north-eastern part of the island on the seaway between Split, Hvar and
Dubrovnik. The beginning of its rich
history dates from the Neolitic Age when the first settlements of Ilyrian
tribes inhabited the island including the nearby Peninsula of Peljesac.
Among the Roman, the Byzantine Empire, the Napoleon's or the Austrian
reign over Korcula, the Venetian period was however, the most
significant for Korcula's cultural and architectural development. Most of
Korcula historical monuments date from that period like Arneri's Palace,
the Museum, the Saint Marc's Chatedral and the birth House of Marco Polo.
According to the legend, Marco Polo, one of the famous world' seafarers,
was born in Korcula. The House of Marco Polo is found in the Old
Town of Korcula just behind the Chatedral.
Moreska, a part of Korcula's tradition is an old Knight performance which
was earlier performed throughout the Mediterranian, but today, it has only
been preserved in Korcula.
